Ford Concepts

The Ford SYNus, Mustang GT-R and F-250 Super Chief will pack a one, two, three punch for showgoers who can peek at their automotive future at this year's Seattle International Auto Show, presented by State Farm, Oct. 31-Nov. 4, at Qwest Field Event Center. The Northwest's largest and most important annual automotive event will feature hundreds of all-new 2008 model year cars, trucks, crossovers, alternative-fuel, minivans, sport utilities and 4WD vehicles from every major automaker, plus one-of-a-kind concepts and extremely rare exotics and classics.

Using the smaller-than-Focus architecture of the Ford Fiesta, the SYNus concept is trim enough to navigate the streets of the cityscape. And that's where things will be happening.

"By 2010, half of the population will live in urban areas," said J Mays, group vice president of Design and chief creative officer, "and will need cars like the SYNus concept that are small, agile, and tough enough to withstand the mean streets of big cities."

More than that, SYNus is capable of serving as a mobile social center tuned to the way young consumers gather and interact.

What helps makes the SYNus concept tech savvy is a gigantic widescreen liquid crystal display that's built into the inside of the vehicle's tailgate. The Sharp Electronics television – with a diagonal measurement of 45 inches, the largest flat screen LCD ever mounted in any vehicle – affords viewers the choice of internet surfing, people watching, or movie viewing.

A move to more fuel-efficient vehicles such as the SYNus concept promises the potential of saving at the gas pump. That's because cars the size of the SYNus are generally lighter than larger vehicles and thus can get by with smaller, less thirsty engines.

The SYNus concept runs on bio-mass diesel, a blend of diesel fuel with a non-toxic, biodegradable diesel alternative.

Actually, the SYNus concept can pass by the gasoline pump entirely, and pull up to the diesel pump. Diesel fuel is typically cheaper than regular unleaded gasoline. Furthermore, diesel-engined vehicles on average can extract more miles from a gallon of fuel than gas-engined vehicles of comparable size.
